AI SEO for Law Firms
AI visibility is ranking for the searches the AI runs for itself.
Ask for your market’s auditThe audit shows what AI tools say about your market.

AI SEO for law firms is the work of being named when someone asks an AI tool for a lawyer. It sounds new, and much of it isn't. AI tools run searches, read the pages that rank and write an answer from them. If your firm ranks for those searches, or sits on the pages that do, you can be in the answer. If not, you can't.
An AI Overview appeared on 35 of the 36 legal marketing searches we read on Google, so this isn't a side issue. It's also where the most nonsense is being sold.
AI SEO for Lawyers Is Still SEO
The formula didn't change. The reader did.
AI SEO for lawyers is still SEO, and Google says so. Its guidance on AI features says the best practices for SEO remain relevant, that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you don't need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema.
So anyone selling you a special AI file or a schema package as the way into AI answers is selling hygiene at best. Rank = Authority + Relevance still decides who gets found, because AI tools mostly read what ranks.
How AI Tools Choose a Law Firm
They search, they read, then they name.
How AI tools choose a law firm starts with a search of their own. Ask a tool for the best car accident lawyer in Houston and it doesn't answer from memory alone. It breaks the question into searches, reads the results and writes from them. Those hidden searches are called fan-out, and they're what you need to rank for.
When we ran that Houston question through ChatGPT twice, it read lawleaderboard, expertise.com and doylesguide before naming three firms. It didn't go straight to the firms' own sites. It went to lists and directories about them. That tells you where the work is:
- Rank for the searches the tool runs. Those are often best-of searches, such as best car accident lawyer in a city.
- Be on the lists it reads. If a tool reads three directories for your city, your name needs to be on them.
- Be a clear entity. Your firm's name, city and practice should read the same everywhere.
LLM SEO for Law Firms: What to Publish
Pages an AI can lift an answer from.
LLM SEO for law firms means publishing pages an AI tool can read and quote. It's the same page that works for a person in a hurry:
- Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading
- Use the question as the heading, in the words people use
- Keep each section able to stand alone
- State facts plainly, with numbers and sources
- Say who wrote it and why they would know
Then give those pages authority. A clear page with no links rarely ranks, and a page that doesn't rank rarely gets read.
AI Marketing for Law Firms Beyond Your Own Site
YouTube and LinkedIn were the two most cited sources we saw.
AI marketing for law firms reaches beyond your own site, because AI answers do. Across the 35 AI Overviews we read, YouTube was cited 69 times and LinkedIn 27 times, more than any agency or law firm. News matters too: in our test of 200 ChatGPT answers, Reuters was cited in 19 of the 30 news answers.
That's why AI social media is one of our four formats. It's also why press coverage matters. When you win, it's news, and AI answers read the news.
What to Ignore in AI SEO for Law Firms
A lot of this year's advice won't survive next year.
What to ignore in AI SEO for law firms is most of what's being sold as new. The main items:
- An llms.txt file. Google says you don't need AI text files for its AI features. It does no harm, and it isn't a strategy.
- Schema as a way in. Google says no special schema is needed. Keep your basic markup accurate and move on.
- Rank scores from one run. AI tools give different answers from one try to the next. A single check proves nothing.
- Promises of being named. Nobody controls what these tools say, and we won't promise it.
How to Measure AI Visibility for a Law Firm
Repeat the question, count what comes back.
How to measure AI visibility for a law firm is to ask the same questions many times and count. Ask a tool one question once and you have an anecdote. Ask it several times, across tools, and you start to see who gets named often and which sources feed them. We report what repeats, with the number of runs beside it.
Then tie it back to the business. Your dashboard should show whether calls are coming from people who say they found you through an AI tool. Ask them. Intake is the best measuring tool you have here.
AI Overviews for Law Firms: What Changes for Your Clicks
Some searches lose clicks. The ones that sign cases change more slowly.
AI Overviews for law firms change where the click goes, and it depends on the search. An AI Overview showed on 35 of the 36 legal marketing searches we read, which are mostly questions and research. When we checked five best in city lawyer searches on October 28, none showed one. So the search that signs a case may still look like a normal results page today, while the question someone asks three days earlier gets answered above the links.
That changes what a firm's content is for. A page answering what to do after a crash may get fewer clicks and still shape who the person calls, because your name was in the answer. Measure it by calls and signed cases, and ask people how they found you. Don't panic over a traffic chart alone.
AI SEO for Law Firms Questions
Here are plain answers to common AI SEO for law firms questions.
Is AI going to replace Google for finding a lawyer?
AI isn't going to replace Google for finding a lawyer any time soon, as far as we can see, and the two are merging anyway. Google's own results now carry AI answers, built from the pages that rank. Either way, the work is the same.
Do I need separate AI SEO for law firms?
You don't need separate AI SEO for law firms if your SEO is done well. You do need to check the searches AI tools run, and the lists they read, because those aren't always the ones your SEO was aimed at. Your audit covers both.
